Mommy always knew.

The first thing I remember was smoke. It was burning my nose. I could tell that mommy had lit another cigarette. When she exhaled the smoke, I could smell sake. Apparently, mommy had also been drinking. Lately, mommy had smelled like sake and cigarettes.
Mommy hadn't always smelled this way,you see. She used to smell like cherry blossoms. She still does, but the smell of alcohol and cigarettes had overpowered the cherry blossom smell. It was a horrible combination of scents. Mommy's new smell had slowly attached itself to her....I think it was from daddy going out so much. I don't know.
But, daddy has been going out an awful lot lately. He'd stay gone for hours, even days at a time. I don't really know what for and I dared not ask. Whenever daddy came back,he usually smelled like alcohol and sweat. It was a horrible odor. Whenever I hugged him, the smell made me nauseous.
Sometimes, when daddy came home, he'd be drunk. I didn't like it when daddy was drunk. He was scary. He would start screaming at mommy for the stupidest things. He's even hit her a few times before. He had hit my brother also...though, not as much as he hit mommy.
Daddy was a completely different man whenever he drank.

It was so hard sorting out all of this in my head. It confused me.

Sniffle.
Mommy was crying. I think she misses daddy. A lot.
I turned to steal a quick glance at her. Mommy looked terrible. She was wearing the same nightgown she had worn for the past few days. Her usually neat hair was in a mess. Her head rested limply against one of her pillows and I could see tears making glistening tracks down her face. I assumed daddy was out again.
My mother looked in my direction and I quickly turned so my back was facing her. I tried to appear to be asleep,though I don't think it worked. I think mommy knew I was awake.
Mommy's not stupid.
She knew.
I wonder if she knew what daddy was going out for. I dare not ask her though.
